The publisher
About 1944 Publishing
An independent publishing house for the Second World War, founded by a living historian in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. We publish the war two ways: firsthand accounts gathered from the veterans themselves, and historical fiction built on exactly the same decade of research.

The founder
T.E. Moeller
I never set out to write a book. I spent nearly a decade as a World War II reenactor and living historian, and over those years I heard countless stories from veterans — some funny, some harrowing, some told only once and with great reluctance.
My memory isn’t what it once was. Around the spring of 2024 I realized that if I didn’t write these stories down, many would disappear entirely.
Background
Ten years in the field
T.E. Moeller is a living historian and educator who has spent more than a decade preserving the stories of America’s World War II generation. As Commanding Officer of Baker Company, 5th Ranger Infantry Battalion (Reenacted), he has guided young men through the discipline, history and responsibility of honoring the soldiers of the European Theater.
His work in living history has taken him to major national events, including D-Day Conneaut and programs at the National World War II Museum and the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. Through conversations with veterans, hands-on interpretation and years of field experience, he has helped bring the stories of ordinary servicemen to new audiences.
He lives in Ohio, where he continues to write, teach and share the legacy of the Greatest Generation with reenactors, students and future historians.
History is not merely what happened. It is what we choose to remember.
How the books get made
Research first, in both directions
Firsthand history
Oral history gathered directly from veterans, reenactors and civilians — recorded before the voices are gone.
The history that might have been
Fiction on the same research. The kit, the tactics and the rations are right. Only the decision at the top is different.
Field notes
Essays on living history and research — what a decade in wool teaches you, and what it never can.
